Exploring Depths: The Art of Matan Sacofsky

Matan Sacofsky, a 27 English-Israeli artist and filmmaker, began painting at a relatively young age, bursting onto the art scene with his dynamic Jerusalem landscapes. Through hard work and the strong drive to paint, he began a remarkable professional journey that has been both intimate and expansive, one that has been mapped with profound vulnerability and creative insight. In a bold twist, Matan subsequently confined himself to his basement studio for close to a month. The introspective legacy of Oscar Wilde is palpable in the young artist's impressive output of self-portraits painted during this period. The artist's face emerges and dissolves in a play of shadow and light, echoing the artistic challenges of bringing a private world into public view and inviting reflection on what it means to delve into one's own depths. The events of October 7, 2023 catapulted Matan into military reserve duty and a reality diametrically opposed to the calm contemplative background in which he had previously immersed himself. The artist's soul and sensibility were sorely tested as he was thrust into battle. The shell casings from his tank, gathered like a harvest from the field, were transformed into expressionist canvases. Paint and different textures are suffused with the emotional intensity of the Psalms -cries, hopes, laments - all transposed into visual, tactile language. The dual site exhibition invites us to reflect upon where the artist stands at this pivotal moment in time and reflects his spiritual autobiography. From the Depths, tracing the journey to even greater depths, and from there upwards toward beauty and light.
