Milieu

"Milieu" - a term that describes a space, environment, or community. Within the realm of fine art, milieu describes a group of artists who create together, exchanging knowledge, experiences, and insights. The exhibition Milieu emerged from an incubator program for immigrant artists, held at 'Studio of Her Own', with the aim of helping immigrant artists integrate into the Israeli art world. Most of the participants arrived in Israel during the last two years, following the events of October 7, alongside more veteran immigrant artists who served as a source of support and knowledge. From the outset, the incubator became a milieu—a supportive, cohesive, and dynamic space in which artists shared knowledge, experiences, and insights. This environment cultivated a sense of not being "alone," a feeling that often characterizes migration. The exhibition presents works by artists who immigrated to Israel from various countries: South Africa, the United States, England, New Zealand, Australia, Ukraine, Austria, Mexico, and Canada. In keeping with the nature of the incubator, the exhibition does not revolve around a single unifying theme. Instead, it offers the viewer an encounter with diverse creative processes and modes of expression, while demonstrating how a community is formed, one which teaches, supports, and empowers its members. Milieu bears witness to the strength found in encounters, between cultures, languages, memories, and experiences of life overseas.
